Email Gateway & SMTP Relay for DirectAdmin

Route the outbound mail of your DirectAdmin servers to the MailGuard smarthost, so it is delivered DKIM-signed from reputation-managed IP pools. Your incoming mail is cleaned of spam and viruses too.

Why does outbound mail land in spam on DirectAdmin?

Like cPanel, DirectAdmin also uses Exim underneath and carries the single-IP reputation risk on shared servers. A compromised account or bulk sending can get the server's outbound IP blacklisted. When you set MailGuard as the smarthost, outbound mail is signed, inspected and delivered from clean IP pools.

Setup with DirectAdmin

  • On the DirectAdmin server, add a smarthost router/transport to the Exim configuration (SASL, port 587).
  • Get your SMTP username + password from the panel; define it in /etc/exim.conf or via a custom include.
  • Require TLS and restart Exim. MailGuard handles the DKIM signing, so no extra configuration is needed on the server.
  • For inbound filtering, point your domain's MX record to mx01/mx02.mailguard.com.tr.

For detailed, copy-paste configuration, see the docs. To test your domain, use the SPF/DKIM/DMARC tool and the mail test.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up a smarthost in DirectAdmin?
You add a manualroute router and an smtp transport to DirectAdmin's Exim configuration and define relay.mailguard.com.tr with 587/SASL; TLS is required.
Does it work the same way as cPanel?
The logic is the same; both are based on Exim. The router/transport definitions are similar, only the file paths differ.
Does DirectAdmin do the DKIM signing?
No need. MailGuard signs outbound mail on your behalf; you don't need to configure signing in DirectAdmin.
Is sending without a static IP possible?
Yes, the recommended method is port 587 with a username + password (SASL); on servers with a static IP, IP authorization can also be used.
Is there an inbound spam filter as well?
Yes. When you point your MX record to MailGuard, incoming mail passes spam/virus and authentication checks, and the clean mail is forwarded to your DirectAdmin server.

Email Delivery on DirectAdmin Servers

DirectAdmin is a lightweight, fast hosting control panel; on the email side it uses the Exim MTA. Just as in other shared hosting environments, delivery depends largely on the server's outbound IP reputation and the accuracy of the DNS records.

When you set MailGuard as the smarthost, DirectAdmin's Exim forwards outbound mail to MailGuard instead of directly to the internet. MailGuard signs every message with DKIM, runs it through content and rate inspection, and delivers it from a reputation-monitored IP with the correct PTR/HELO. This way one customer's behavior doesn't affect the entire server, and the blacklist risk is minimized.

On the inbound side, MX redirection filters out spam, phishing and viruses; only clean mail reaches your DirectAdmin server. Without touching your existing accounts and mailboxes, you gain enterprise-grade delivery and security.
