Smart Host & Email Gateway for Microsoft Exchange

Point your Exchange Send Connector to MailGuard so your outbound mail is DKIM-signed and delivered from reputation-managed IPs, while your inbound mail is cleaned of spam and viruses. Compatible with on-premises Exchange deployments.

Why doesn't Exchange outbound mail reach external recipients?

On-premises Exchange servers usually send from a single static IP. If that IP's PTR/rDNS record, SPF alignment or reputation is insufficient, major providers delay the messages, mark them as spam or reject them. MailGuard receives Exchange's outbound mail as a smart host and takes over authentication, signing and reputation management.

Setup with Exchange

  • In Exchange Admin Center › Mail flow › Send Connectors, create a new connector (or use PowerShell New-SendConnector).
  • Smart host: relay.mailguard.com.tr, port 587, TLS required (BasicAuthRequireTLS).
  • Enter your SMTP username + password as credentials; disable DNS routing (DNSRoutingEnabled $false).
  • For inbound filtering, point your domain's MX record to mx01/mx02.mailguard.com.tr.

For detailed, copy-paste configuration, see the docs. To test your domain, use the SPF/DKIM/DMARC tool and mail test.

Frequently asked questions

How is a smart host configured in Exchange?
In EAC › Mail flow › Send Connectors, or with PowerShell New-SendConnector, you define relay.mailguard.com.tr as the smart host using 587/TLS and your SMTP credentials.
Is Office 365 / Exchange Online supported?
MailGuard is primarily positioned as a smart host for on-premises Exchange. For Exchange Online, contact us based on your outbound connector scenario.
Do I have to configure the PTR/rDNS setting myself?
No. Your outbound mail leaves from MailGuard's reputation-managed egress IPs and is delivered with the correct PTR and HELO. You don't have to deal with the rDNS of your own IP.
Does Exchange add the DKIM signature?
No, MailGuard signs outbound mail with DKIM on behalf of your domain. No signing configuration is required on the Exchange side.
Is there enterprise redundancy?
Yes. High availability is ensured through IP pools distributed across multiple network blocks and a redundant architecture; the delivery chain is verified with DANE + DNSSEC.

Smart Host for Exchange: Enterprise Email Delivery

Microsoft Exchange is the backbone of corporate email. However, how an on-premises Exchange server delivers to the outside world depends on many factors such as IP reputation, PTR/rDNS alignment, SPF alignment and TLS configuration. If any of these settings is missing, corporate mail is delayed or lands in spam.

The smart host model offloads this complexity to MailGuard. Exchange forwards outbound mail to MailGuard rather than directly to the internet; MailGuard handles authentication (DKIM signing), content/virus inspection and reputation management, then delivers it to the destination with the correct PTR and HELO. Your organization no longer has to manage the reputation of its single IP.

On the inbound side, pointing the MX record to MailGuard filters out spam, phishing and viruses before they ever reach the Exchange server. The result: more stable corporate email traffic, higher deliverability and inbound/outbound security managed from a single platform.
