Outbound Gateway & SMTP Relay for SmarterMail

Send SmarterMail's outbound mail through MailGuard so it's delivered DKIM-signed from reputation-managed IP pools. Your inbound mail is cleaned of spam and viruses too.

Why does SmarterMail outbound mail end up in spam?

SmarterMail is a powerful Windows mail server; however, delivery still depends on the server's egress IP reputation. Heavy sending from a single IP, missing SPF/DKIM or a blacklist entry will lower deliverability. When you define MailGuard as your outbound gateway, outbound mail is signed, inspected and delivered from clean pools.

Setup with SmarterMail

  • In SmarterMail › Settings › Gateways / Outbound Gateways › Add, add a new SMTP gateway.
  • Address: relay.mailguard.com.tr, port 587; under “Requires authentication”, enter your SMTP username + password.
  • TLS: choose STARTTLS/Explicit and make this gateway the default outbound gateway.
  • For inbound filtering, point your domain's MX record to mx01/mx02.mailguard.com.tr.

For detailed, copy-paste configuration, see the docs. To test your domain, use the SPF/DKIM/DMARC tool and mail test.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add an outbound gateway in SmarterMail?
In Settings › Outbound Gateways › Add, you define relay.mailguard.com.tr as an SMTP gateway on port 587 with authentication and TLS, and make it the default outbound gateway.
Should I use SmarterMail's own DKIM?
Not required. MailGuard signs outbound mail on your behalf. If you prefer, the SmarterMail signature also passes through intact — we don't touch the message body.
Is sending without authentication (IP-based) possible?
The recommended method is port 587 with a username + password (SASL); IP authorization is also possible for servers with a static IP.
Is inbound spam protection included?
Yes. When you point your MX record to MailGuard, inbound mail passes through spam/virus and authentication checks, and the clean mail is delivered to SmarterMail.
Does deliverability improve for bulk sending?
Yes. Thanks to rate limiting, reputation management and a fixed IP per domain, delivery success improves noticeably for bulk sending.

Delivery and Spam Management with SmarterMail

SmarterMail is a mail server favored especially in Windows-based hosting environments. Although its email sending/receiving capabilities are strong, delivery to external providers depends on the server's IP reputation and DNS records. On a SmarterMail server that sends in high volume, a single problematic account can affect the reputation of the entire egress IP.

When you define MailGuard as your outbound gateway, SmarterMail forwards outbound mail to MailGuard. MailGuard signs every message with DKIM, runs content and rate checks, then delivers it from a reputation-monitored IP. This raises the delivery rate and lowers the risk of blacklisting.

On the inbound side, MX routing adds spam and virus filtering, so user inboxes are cleared of junk and malicious mail. This way you manage inbound and outbound email security from a single point without changing your SmarterMail infrastructure.
